LEAKAGE THROUGH THE DAMS

Internal erosion is one of the major reasons for embankment dam failures. Monitoring of electrical resistivity may have possibility of detecting internal erosion processes and anomalous leakage at an early stage before the safety of the dam is at stake.
TEM-FAST technique is essentially non-destructive, which is very important when working with embankment dams where drilling and other penetrating investigations are normally avoided. The example presents results of a TEM-FAST investigation of the dike carried out at the Spakenburg in the Netherlands (summer 2004).
